Dateline blueberries: Sunday June 25, 2006

Hello all,
I took my umbrella and goulashes and ventured out to check on ripening status. Despite all the rain and lack of sun the early variety seems ready for some selective harvesting.

I plan to hold back on putting the Birch Bend Blueberry sign out at the top of the street and OPEN at this time to my email customers and see if we can stay ahead of the harvest. The 6 rows that are ripe at this moment are to the left of the patch starting in rows 4 thru about 10. Feel free to email me with any questions or for more immediate response call me at 742-7343 for details.

The birds have already started harvesting the biggest and ripest of the bunch so don’t delay.

Buds on the blueberry bushes

First Buds

Hello all.

Last Sunday at about sunset I ventured out to get the first shots of bud break. Things were a little further on than I expected but then again I was in the variety that harvests in late June.

Thanks to all that helped during the winter the patch has never looked better. The small white blossoms are wild blueberries that are sprinkled around the patch. Don’t know how they got there but I think they help attract the bumble bee which is critical to pollination.

I will keep you informed,

Mark
